Utility Relocation and Water Main Project Underway Near Cortez Bridge
Construction is underway on two major infrastructure projects near the Cortez Bridge and along Manatee Avenue as Manatee County works to relocate utilities and install a new water main crossing beneath the Intracoastal Waterway.
The Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project is currently taking place on the south side of Cortez Road West near the bridge. Crews have begun installing pipes on both the north and south sides of the roadway, with work expected to continue through the summer of 2026. As construction progresses, residents and visitors may encounter intermittent lane shifts, flagging operations, and closures affecting sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
Construction activity is scheduled Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution in the work zone and follow posted detours designed to safely guide foot and bike traffic around the construction area.
At the same time, work is advancing on the Manatee Avenue Water Main Intracoastal Crossing Project. The project involves installing new infrastructure beneath the waterway to strengthen the county’s water distribution system. Construction on the western portion of the project has already begun.
While construction equipment will be moving in and out of the area, the popular Kingfish Boat Ramp will remain open throughout the project. Officials note that boaters and visitors may experience minor inconveniences as crews operate heavy equipment and transport materials through the work zone.
Residents should also expect activity such as dewatering pipes, drilling operations, and the presence of construction vehicles and equipment along the right-of-way. Brief and intermittent lane closures may occur on Cortez Road West as crews perform necessary work.
County officials say the improvements are part of ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure, improve utility reliability, and support the region’s growing population. Construction schedules may shift depending on weather or other unforeseen conditions.
