A vehicle fire brought northbound traffic on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to a halt Monday morning as firefighters and Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the incident.
The fire occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 275 on the bridge, producing a large amount of smoke that made it unsafe for vehicles to continue through the area. Authorities temporarily blocked all northbound lanes while emergency crews worked at the scene.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions for motorists traveling north from Manatee County toward Pinellas County. Drivers approaching the bridge faced delays while crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the roadway.
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge carries I-275 across Tampa Bay and is a major route connecting Manatee County with the St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay area.
Authorities had not released information about what caused the vehicle to catch fire or the type of vehicle involved as of Monday morning.
The incident occurred during the morning travel period on Aug. 31. Motorists traveling through the area were advised to expect delays as emergency crews handled the scene.
