Vern Buchanan to Retire After 20 Years Representing Southwest Florida in Congress
U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, the Longboat Key Republican who has represented Manatee County and parts of Southwest Florida for two decades, announced he will retire at the end of his current term and will not seek re-election in 2026. Buchanan was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006 and has served continuously since then, making him the longest-serving Republican from the region in Congress.
During his time in office, Buchanan held key roles on the House Ways and Means Committee, including vice chairmanship, and chaired its Health Subcommittee. His legislative record includes sponsoring and advancing more than 50 bills and initiatives signed into law under presidents from both major parties. His work focused on tax and trade policy, health care, veterans issues and animal welfare, among other areas.
Buchanan also worked on high-profile trade agreements and secured federal funding for local projects, such as a national veterans cemetery in Sarasota. In his retirement announcement, he said it was the right time to “pass the torch” after two decades of public service.
His decision opens the seat for Florida’s 16th Congressional District ahead of the 2026 elections, setting the stage for a competitive primary season among potential Republican and Democratic candidates.

8 years to long for anyone to be a representative. Politics should not be a career.
