West Manatee Fire District Issues Urgent Warning on Golf Cart Charging Hazards
The West Manatee Fire and Rescue District has issued a safety advisory to residents regarding the potential dangers of improperly charging golf carts. This everyday activity can carry hidden, life-threatening risks.
As electric golf carts continue to gain popularity in neighborhoods and coastal communities, particularly on Anna Maria Island and its surrounding areas, fire officials are raising awareness about the dangers of charging them in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. The primary concern involves hydrogen gas, which is emitted from lead-acid batteries during the charging process.
Hydrogen gas is both colorless and odorless, making it virtually undetectable without proper equipment. Like carbon monoxide, it can accumulate quickly in enclosed areas such as garages, posing a deadly hazard. High concentrations of hydrogen gas can result in fire, explosion, or asphyxiation.
To minimize the risk, West Manatee Fire urges residents to follow these safety tips:
Always charge golf carts in a well-ventilated area.
Never leave carts plugged in for extended periods or allow them to overcharge.
If charging indoors, use a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector.
This advisory is part of the district’s ongoing effort to prevent home fires and protect public safety. Golf carts are a staple in many island and retirement communities, but their batteries—particularly older or improperly maintained ones—can quickly become hazardous without proper precautions.
Fire officials encourage all residents to share the warning with neighbors, friends, and family members to help prevent avoidable tragedies. For more safety tips or information, visit the West Manatee Fire & Rescue District website or contact your local fire station for assistance.
