WWII Hero and Bradenton Resident John Skeen Remembered for a Century of Service and Legacy
Manatee County has lost one of its most distinguished residents with the passing of John Virgil Skeen, a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, who died on October 21, 2025, at the age of 107. He passed peacefully in the Hospice Unit at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital.
At Tuesday’s Manatee County Board of County Commissioners meeting, officials honored Skeen’s life and service with a moment of silence and a display of memorabilia recognizing his extraordinary contributions to his country and community.
Born on October 3, 1918, Skeen was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 with the activation of the West Virginia National Guard. He was among the first troops deployed to Alaska during the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign before joining the newly formed 70th Infantry Division—known as the “Trailblazers”—as a platoon leader in the 275th Infantry Regiment.
During his time in Europe, Skeen fought in major campaigns across the Ardennes, Rhineland, Saarland, and Alsace-Lorraine, enduring the harsh winter battles that defined the closing months of the war. His courage earned him numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
In 2025, the government of France recognized his role in liberating French towns by awarding him the Legion d’Honneur, one of the nation’s highest honors. After the war, Skeen remained dedicated to preserving the legacy of his fellow soldiers, serving as vice president and lifelong member of the 70th Infantry Division Association. He devoted years to sharing veterans’ stories and teaching World War II history to younger generations.
John Skeen’s century-spanning life was marked by bravery, humility, and a deep commitment to honoring those who served beside him. His memory will continue to inspire the community he called home.
